Homemade Sloppy Joes

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 lb of ground beef, turkey, or vegan crumbles.
  • 8 oz can of tomato sauce
  • 8oz (1 cup) ketchup
  • 1 green bell pepper – finely chopped
  • 1 small onion (or 1/2 medium to large onion) – finely chopped
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 clove of garlic (or 1tsp minced garlic or garlic powder)
  • 1/4 tsp ground mustard
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder
  • 1/4 tsp celery seed
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • Choice of bread

PREPARATION

Sauté the onion and green pepper in olive oil for about two minutes on medium heat before adding the ground meat or vegan crumbles of your choice. If using meat, break apart with a spatula and keep sautéing until the meat has browned and is broken down to your desired consistency.

Mix together the tomato sauce, ketchup, salt, garlic, mustard, chili powder, and celery seed in a bowl before adding to pan. Mix well and turn heat on low for about 15 minutes or until the protein and veggies are to your desired consistency. Serve on your choice of bread.
